CHRISTIANSBURG, Virginia: The new year ushered in a new standard in Certified Reference Materials (CRM) shelf life with the launch of Inorganic Ventures' Transpiration Control Technology (TCT) used to package stock chemical standards and drastically extend shelf life.
Transpiration refers to the passage of water vapor through the walls, or opening, of a container resulting in an increase of concentration. http://www.inorganicventures.com/TCT.
"Our research focused on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) containers, and we tested the rate of transpiration based on bottle size and the circumference of the container opening," Inorganic Ventures, CEO and Senior Technical Director, Paul Gaines, Ph.D., said. "Our findings indicated that transpiration around the bottle opening is the dominant mechanism and we got to work finding a solution."
Recognizing the significant impact on the shelf life of CRMs, Inorganic Ventures researched a variety of ways to halt transpiration.
"We looked into refrigeration, which slows transpiration, and single-use sealed glass ampoules, which stop it," Gaines said. "Unfortunately, these had limitations. Not all labs have access to refrigeration, and glass containers are not as clean as plastic, or as chemically resistant to certain types of acid."
After years of careful research, Inorganic Ventures developed its Transpiration Control Technology, heat-sealed aluminized bags that effectively stop transpiration when equilibrium is reached inside. CRMs stored using TCT have a shelf life that is limited only by chemical stability.
At no additional cost to customers, products sent in the new packaging will not expire until one year from the opening of the TCT bag, or upon lot expiration, whichever comes first. TCT eliminates concerns about storage, increasing concentration over time, and saving labs money.
