Malaysia to Host 1st Global Manipal Alumni Convention

PR Newswire | 22 Jul, 2014
BANGALORE: About 1,000 alumni from the renowned Manipal University from all over the world will meet at the Royale Chulan Hotel in Kuala Lumpur for the 1st Global Manipal Alumni Health, Science and Technology Convention and 28th MAAM Convention this 7th-8th August 2014. Datuk Seri Dr. S. Subramaniam, Malaysia's Minister of Health is expected to officiate.

The event, organised by the Manipal Alumni Association of Malaysia (MAAM), is set to be the biggest gathering of Manipal alumni organised outside of India. Themed 'Networking Globally for the Future of Healthcare and Technology', the conference will be a gathering of the university's medical, dental, pharmacy and engineering alumni as well as other healthcare professionals from around the world to share ideas, knowledge, the latest developments in their field of practice as well as a time to reunite with friends and batch-mates from their alma mater.

"We have alumni from 1969 right up to recent graduates from batch 2005, who have registered to attend the convention. The convention will be an opportune time for the alumni to network and reunite with university batch mates. It will also be a golden opportunity for fresh graduates and those who have just begun their careers to meet many senior professionals who will be able to share their experiences," says Associate Professor Dr. Philip George, the convention's Organising Chairman.

"Mentoring is something our association fully supports and encourages. Many of our healthcare professionals rose through the ranks steadily in their careers with the support and guidance of good mentors," says Philip George, the 1982 batch Manipalite, who is also a Consultant Psychiatrist based in Malaysia.

"Many of the speakers in the convention are world renowned in their areas of practice and there will be a wealth of knowledge and insight to gain from attending the talks and workshops," he added.

A stellar line-up of about 90 speakers and an extensive scientific programme is in store for delegates attending the convention. The programme will include plenary sessions by key speakers, lectures, symposiums, pre and post conference workshops, a convention debate and free paper sessions. CPD points will be awarded to delegates attending.

Plenary sessions and lectures by Professor Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran (President of FIGO -International Federation of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and President of the British Medical Association), Dr.Unni Krishnan Karunakara (Past President, Médecins Sans Frontières International, Geneva, Switzerland), Dr.Shreedhar Potarazu (CEO Vital Springs, USA) and Dr. K. Ramnarayan (Vice Chancellor, Manipal University, India) are among the highlights at the convention.

Professor Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran will speak on Leadership & Management in Clinical Education, Dr.Unni will deliver a Plenary address titled MedicalHumanitarian Action - A Médecins Sans Frontières Perspective, while Dr.Shreedhar Potarazu will speak on The Future of Healthcare Service Delivery - Models to Ponder and Dr. K. Ramnarayan on Becoming World Class:  Thinking Beyond Conventional Boundaries.

MAAM organises regular CPD events and this will be the biggest CPD event to date. On what inspired the idea of organising a 1st Global convention, Dr. Nirmal, President of MAAM explains that there is a wide network of illustrious and well known alumni who have made significant contributions in the fields of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and engineering throughout the world and a convention would be a great way to showcase them while providing an opportunity for the alumni to meet and network.

Apart from the conference, social events will also be organised for alumni and their family members. "One of the events everyone is looking forward to is the Gala night," says Dr. Nirmal.

"This will be one of the rare moments where most of our batch-mates get to meet in one place in an informal setting. We have many fond memories studying together and the Gala dinner will be a great opportunity to catch up on old times. All of us can hardly wait!" he added.

Registrations online, via the event's official website have picked up over the last two months and the association hopes to reach the targeted 1,000 delegates. "At the rate the registrations are coming in, there could also be a possibility of registrations exceeding the 1,000 targeted and this is why we have been informing our alumni online on Facebook and Twitter to register early to avoid disappointment," says Dr. Philip.

Manipal University is a leading higher education provider in medicine, engineering, management and humanities with over 100,000 alumni throughout the world in 35 different countries.

Malaysia alone has close to 7,000 Manipal Alumni Healthcare professionals. The Melaka campus has presently about 3,000 medical alumni working in Malaysia.
