SAN FRANCISCO: People looking to create an entirely new career or just have a more positive perspective on their present job have strategies available to help them, says David Cunningham, a communication expert with Landmark Education. Cunningham offers these tips:

1) Paint a picture of how life should be

Most people choose a career path based on childhood experiences, education or family desires. But they need not be limited by present experience and credentials. Cunningham advises people to create a picture of what they want life to look like, then seek a career that helps that future unfold.

2) Borrow other brains

It's easy to get stuck in habitual ways of thinking, particularly when a person is dissatisfied in his or her current job or career. This is when it's very helpful to brainstorm new opportunities with others who can help find resources, ideas, contacts, and even entire career options. The most successful people are skilled at tapping into the resource others offer.

3) Practice new ways of being

To create a new job or a new career involves facing challenges with strength. One way to do this is to emulate a successful person and think how they would respond. Would they be being powerful? Unstoppable? Bold? A hero can provide a great example.

"You really can create a job for yourself that you're passionate about, that gives you satisfaction," Cunningham says. "The biggest difference between those who merely dream, and those who succeed in realizing their dreams, is the ability to think and act in new ways. When you challenge your existing perspectives, you're able to access new levels of creativity, which translates into breakthrough results."

David Cunningham is a communication expert and seminar leader for Landmark Education, a personal and professional growth, training and development company that's had more than 1.2 million people use its programs to cause breakthroughs in their personal lives as well as in their communities, generating more than 100,000 community projects around the world. In The Landmark Forum, Landmark's flagship program, people cause breakthroughs in their performance, communication, relationships and overall satisfaction in life.
