LEEDS (England): If you haven't yet heard of the Apple iPad, where have you been?! The iPad has caused one of the biggest media frenzies in recent years, as consumers eagerly awaited its launch.
The iPad is a tablet computer which was developed and built by Apple. It was announced in January this and by April 28 it launched in the UK. The original launch date for the iPad was set back due to demand in the US - Apple had started taking orders from the US for the iPad from March 2010.
According to Apple, the iPad is 'a magical and revolutionary product at an unbelievable price,' so what does the iPad offer? Technical Specifications
- The iPad's screen is of a high-resolution with a 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS display. - The screen is designed to show content on the screen in either portrait or landscape orientation, with a wide viewing angle of 178 degrees. - The screen is Multi Touch - The iPad is thin and light - It has 10 hours of battery life - It is Wireless - The dock connector port on the bottom of the iPad allows you to dock and charge it. It also lets you connect to accessories like the iPad Camera Connection Kit and the iPad Keyboard Dock. Many other accessories are also available - Built in speakers for a fuller sound - Comes with a headphone jack and built-in microphone.
Accessories
- There are many iPad accessories available including: - Full-sized keyboard - iPad connection kit in order to import images - iPod case - Thousands of applications available
The iPad is meant to revolutionise the way we work. As a mini computer almost, it enables you to do work, have fun and browse the web. Just like the iPhone, the iPad has many different applications. All of these applications were built from the ground up in order to take full advantage of the touch and orientation screen.
If you already own the iPhone then there's no real learning curve with the iPad. The touch screen enables you to scroll through the images and internet as you would with the iPhone. The iPad takes touch screen navigation to a new level; consumers are dependent on their fingers to get where they want to go. This is not complicated if you have already owned an iPhone, and easy to learn for beginners.
Receiving and sending emails is easy with the iPad. Use the screen in landscape and get a split-screen view, where you can see both read and unopened emails. To focus on an email, turn the screen to portrait, where the email will automatically readjust in order for you to read thoroughly. Tap the screen in order for a big keyboard to appear on the screen that enables you to type properly. The keys are practically the same size as a keyboard's. The iPad even accelerates your typing speed as it corrects typing, inserts punctuation automatically and suggests words and even tracks what you write. To view attachments simply tap the file and it opens automatically- no need to download any other files in order to see them.
Watch High-Definition TV or even podcasts in excellent quality on the iPad. With ten hours of battery life the iPad is perfectly designed to keep you entertained over a long flight. Simply take it out and put it on the tray in front of you.
Nothing about the iPad feels at all cheap, it is a well put together device. However, it is heavier than expected, which could become uncomfortable if people are simply holding it in their hands for long periods of use. The colour display is excellent with brilliant contrasts in colours.
The iPad is very easy to use if you have already used an iPhone or iPod touch. However, it will be a learning curve for people who have not previously owned one. Having said that, the touch surfaces are the best available.
A few things need to be mentioned regarding what the iPad does not have. These include a camera, USB ports or keyboard. If you want a keyboard it has to be bought separately. As the iPad keyboard can be a bit uncomfortable when using for long periods of time, it could be worth getting one. The iPad is also unable to multitask, which makes business use difficult, coupled with the keyboard issue. The iPad also does not have a built-in GPS, which some people will have become accustomed to being a standard.
Altogether, the iPad is a revolutionary product, but there are still some kinks that need ironing out. It is worth mentioning that the iPad 3G is also available, which aims to iron out these kinks, but not all. Technology in this area will only develop further, so we eagerly await what the next development will be.
iPad discounts
It is worth mentioning that students, teachers, lecturers or education staff are able to get a discount on Apple iPad products, if they fulfil the criteria.
