Manmohan Singh on Tuesday has elected leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party, with party president Sonia Gandhi saying his record of the last five years was an inspiration for all.

Sonia Gandhi proposed Manmohan Singh's name at a meeting of the newly-elected Congress MPs held at parliament's Central Hall.

Moving the proposal, Gandhi said: "As per provision of clause 5B of the constitution of the Congress Parliamentary Party, I name Dr. Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister and urge you to support this by acclamation."

She told the newly elected MPs: "His (Manmohan Singh) record of last five years speaks for itself and we look forward to his leadership in the coming years."

"His dignified, determined and effective leadership of the government has been an inspiration for us all and has received overwhelming approval from the people of the country," Gandhi added.

"Let us all congratulate him and wish him well," she said.

Gandhi was elected chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party. Her name was proposed by senior leader Pranab Mukherjee and backed by Salman Khurshid, Kishore Chandra Deo, Minakshi Natarajan and Mallikarjun Kharge.
