Bikky Khosla | 20 Sep, 2011
In present day business world, it's hard to imagine life without information technology (IT). The stunning speed of developments in the IT sector in the past few decades has changed the world of commerce so much that we can hardly think now how we managed our businesses just 20 years ago.

But while we all are well aware of the progress in the field of IT, most of us fail to see the fact that changes are still continuing and it is as important as it has always been to keep pace with them. If you are operating a business and you are lagging behind in race while your competition is not, it could be a real problem.

Historically, Indian businesses are not much willing to invest on IT. This tendency, more dominant among the small and medium enterprises (SMEs), has changed to some extent in the recent years and today's small and big firms are increasingly using IT solutions like ERP (enterprise resource planning), CRM (customer relationship management), SCM (supply chain management), and BPR (business process re-engineering). But still it is far from being true that Indian SMEs are using IT to its true potential.

IT integration is one of the areas where, I feel, Indian SMEs lag behind. What does IT integration refer to? In terms of computer terminology, it means any software that joins together two or more already existing information systems and thus integrates the diverse information sources into a single framework. For example, instead of running ERP, CRM, SCM and BPR on separate software, which takes your productive time and hence affects your business productivity, you can use an integrated software so that information can then be shared by all the separate applications simultaneously.

Let's see a simple example to have a clear idea. Suppose one of your clients wants to place an online order; when you have integrated software solution, the software can not only take, shift and allocate the order to the manufacturing unit but also place an order for raw materials on the basis of the available stock, and update your financial position accordingly. It is how an integrated software works and enables a firm to keep a tab on every information pertaining to the business - materials, machines, men and money - in an efficient and cost-effective way.

These days, the number of Indian SMEs with online presence is not small. But most of them hardly go beyond putting a website on the Internet and availing an online e-commerce shop for their customers. Thus they restrict the scope and benefits of IT. In contrast, here they can use an integrated software, combined with the web, and joining together CRM and SCM to connect with the customers and suppliers, and a web-based ERP for the entire company operations.

The nature of information type and flow may vary from firm to firm but, whatever they are, integrating the existing information systems in a clever way will certainly help any business to cut down a good deal of non-value added processes and paperwork. For a small business, it could also be a key to overcome the resource constraints, and change the business for better.

Pricing
Mohan | Fri Sep 30 05:03:54 2011
The reason could be price and a big learning curve. There seems to be very little logic in costing of the software products, unlike a manufactured product.Often running cost of the software could be very high and you don't get trained people at an affordable price. Exept Tally every other vendor has got its US dreams and Dollar revenues. Selling Software in India cannot be as profitable as selling to Foreign customer at Dollar terms.

IT integration - a smart tool for SMEs
Yoginder Singh Sood | Sun Sep 25 02:20:38 2011
Very well said - most of us the SME's do want to change with the times but are not well aware of the IT tools that can be really beneficial to us. Like my business deals in building materials - mainly retailing to IHB (Individual Home Builders) segment. I would like to suggest that IT tools that can be beneficial to traders - wholesalers / retailers, to Small/medium industrial enterprises etc. should be listed from time to time. This will help SMEs to try out new technologies according to their needs. Most of us today use Tally ERP9 for accounting - the benefits of Tally ERP9 should be discussed in detail, so that we can know for what other benefits can this software be used in other than every day accounting.

Ensure Alignment of IT with Business objectives
R.Wilfred Raju | Thu Sep 22 08:57:51 2011
Though we have world class matured quality processes/standards like CMM, ISO standards, Six sigma, Cost saving measures and systems etc., along with best solution approaches/models, some companies are still lagging behind to adapt for a change of new economic boom. The organizations struggling for survival are registering quarter to quarter downward trend of bottom line, where cost is increasing and ROI (Return on Investments) is in remote corner, resulting in no sign of recovery. There could be many reasons for low productivity, bottleneck in the business process, financial loss, cost overrun, more expenditure, less profit etc. One of the reasons could be mis-alignment of IT (Information Technology) with Business objectives. Keeping this context in mind, let me throw more light on how IT investment is aligned with business objectives and how the relevant factors and parameters have negative impacts on the performance of the business objectives/ goals/ strategies. Earlier, IT was considered as a supporting tool. But, now it has become essential for businesses and many organizations have invested around half of their capital in IT related activities. IT investments could be for hardware, software - applications/technologies; projects; network devices, etc. To know more,Pl. reach wilfred@optiriskindia.com,who is a management consultant and the Head – Consulting with OptiRisk India, specializes in BPR,Process and productivity improvement focusing on ROI and Six sigma.

SMEs in of Howrah losing business due to lack of IT knowledge
Sirsendu Banerjee | Thu Sep 22 07:35:07 2011
Businessmen (SMEs) of Howrah industrial belt unable to come in focus due to lack of IT knowledge. Its can be a biggest business hub in Country if the SMEs of Howrah started focus on it. They have good manufacturing unit but don't have proper online marketing policy. As a result they are losing business. Within a limitation they used to run the show. I feel--its not only a biggest problem for Howrah Industries, may be there are other industries people who have same problem. We must target those industries to educate them on this subject. Tradeindia.com can release this kind of newsletter by targeting an industrial belt of a city/state---- it may help industries people.

You are right but...
Aditya Menon | Thu Sep 22 03:27:30 2011
I completely agree with most of your post, Mr. Khosla. However, I must disagree when you say this: "These days, the number of Indian SMEs with online presence is not small." - the number, in fact, is disproportionately small. Indian SMEs seem to still lag behind having a strong grasp of the potential of the internet, and struggle to understand how to take advantage of this powerful global communications system. And like you said, most medium enterprises must consider integrating their on-site software solutions with their on-line presence and websites, but that is the second step. Many, many businesses that can gain immensely from the internet, are losing out by not even taking the first step of creating a website and effectively marketing it to their target audience. Not to advertise unduly, but we at adbhuth consultants (http://www.adbhuth.in) are helping bring about change in our own small way, with our internet marketing consulting, website design, web hosting and cloud based software development services. Please feel free to contact us today on adbhuth9@gmail.com or on 9666689309, for availing of our reasonably priced plans - and take your business presence on the internet to the next level.
