Even as dissection and analysis continue on the global economic slowdown and the volatile rupee and their effects on Indian exports, we are perhaps overlooking certain factors that are hurting our exporters more than we give credit for. Rising inflation, high fuel prices, the uncertain rupee and  global recession, tariff and non-tariff barriers are exogenous factors, most of which are beyond our realm.

What is in our power to mend and amend are factors we always overlook and attach no importance to. The internal factors are, in actuality, hurting both manufacturers and exporters more than the external factors.

We don't need to go very far to realize this. In our neighbourhood, China has done a lot to answer these internal problems and the results are before us for all to see. If we can do half of what China is doing, I think we can avoid the impending crisis of becoming uncompetitive in global markets.

Infrastructure facilities particularly in the transportation sector - roads, railways, ports, airports, etc. - for movement of goods are major constraints in the growth of the Indian Industry. Lower transaction costs have given China the competitive edge over India, in terms of exports. It takes around 41 days to book a container in India as opposed to just a day in China.

Power shortage alone contributes to a production loss of at least one percent of India's GDP. And that's not all - India spends only around 4 percent on infrastructure development, while China invests around 7 percent of its GDP on developing infrastructure.

The Chinese government is giving more tax rebates, subsidies to exporters and export-oriented manufacturers. This move has encouraged Chinese exporters to make inroads into almost all areas across the globe. Well in India's case, the less said the better!

Domestic indirect taxes are often singled out as a major reason why India Inc. is uncompetitive. Total taxes on manufactured goods are 25 to 30 percent of the retail price in India, compared to 15 percent in China. That means indirect taxes contribute 50 percent to the difference in retail prices between India and other low-cost countries. All we are left to do is to make a hue and cry about Chinese goods flooding our markets.

I think the authorities can do more. At the moment the Indian exporters are getting little assistance to increase exports.

Let's stop blaming global recession, volatile rupee

The article is absolutely correct. The policy makers as well as implementing agencies ie., political parties etc., should think twice and do the needful to the industry which in turn will help the citizens of India.

Moving to singapore

" The Chinese government is giving more tax rebates, subsidies to exporters and export-oriented manufacturers. This move has encouraged Chinese exporters to make inroads into almost all areas across the globe. Well in India's case, the less said the better!" It used to be that in India export income was 100% tax exempt now it is not so. Also I am not able to open a EEFC account to hold my foreign income in USD to pay for software purchases. The SEZ Act seems to be a scam because I am not able to find a functional sez to put up a software unit to take advantage of tax exemptions. I am thinking of moving my software business to singapore as it seems more business friendly also IT is just 18% max for businesses and going down. Also foreign income is not taxed at all in singapore if it is not brought into singapore. I would love to continue to stay in India if only the government will pay more attention to software instead of giving freebies to farmers.

I am not sure from where you got this inforamation that it takes 41 days to book a container in India and in China it takes a day . I am in export industry for years and You will get the container booked in 3 hrs in India compared to a day in China . I believe we all love to beat and enjoy stating all problems about India without knowing the fact . Pl correct and if not i WILL send you contact details of 100K shipping agnet address who will endorse what I am stating .

You are right. Unless they reduce taxes to an extent to be competitive not only to compare with the Chinese goods but also to offer relief to our own customers who are reeling under severe inflation.

Govt does not seem to have solution towards reducing taxes mainly because of highly inefficient beaurocracy. Many Govt deptt eat away upto % of planned expenditure by way of salaries !! The govt and the public should realise this !! What public can do is to make Govt servants realise this whever they come accross the situation. We shoul dtreat Govt servants like servants and expect efficient service instead of bribing then and getting our own work done at the cost of negligence to our fellowmen's problem !!Corruption does bring about solution to your impending problem today but lead to problems of tommorrow. Our mindset should change and we should avoid corrupting Govt servants.

I TOTALLY AGREE TO YOUR OPINION SIR. HERE THE GOVERNMENT IS BY AND OF AND NOT FOR THE PEOPLE. THERE WAS A TIME, WHEN AGENT WERE FOUND IN RED LIGHT AREAS. TODAY FOR GETTING ANY JOB FROM CUSTOMS CLEARANCE TO RTO LICENCES PEOPLE WETHER EDUCATED OR ILLITRATE HAS TO GO THROUGH AGENTS. FIRST WE SHOULD ABOLISH THE AGENT SYSTEM. THESE AGENTS ONLY ACT AS A CONDUIT FOR THE BRIBE MONEY AND IF YOU AVOID THEM, YOU WORK IS DELAYED OR GET LOST. OUR FIRST P.M.MR.PANDIT NEHRU WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO USE AGENTS AND FOLLOWED BY HIS GRAND SON IN BOFORS. RECENTLY I APPLIED FOR THE REFUND OF EXCISE DUTY PAID UNDER AR1 WITH COMPLETE DOCUMENTS TO EXCISE OFFICE LIKE, A/W BILL, SHIPPING BILL AR1 DULY SIGNED BY CUSTOM OFFICER AT AIRPORT. THE COPY OF SHIPPING BILL WAS OF EXCHANGE CONTROL COPY. THE OFFICER SITTING IN C.EXCISE DEMANDS THE COPY OF E.P.SHIPPING BILL. BOTH COPYS ARE SAME.E.P.COPY IS SUPPOSED TO BE SUBMITTED TO BANK. THIS IS HARRASMENT ARE NOT ?THIS IS INDIA.

Politics Involvement by us
Mukund Parmar, Ahmedabad | Wed Jun 18 04:31:16 2008
you are right sir regarding the opinion but the main reason behind this is we left everything to authorities means to politicians. why we are not taking part into politics. We blame others but not puting ourself at that place. We Indians have to involve in politics. Business people making relations for their benefits only, not for others. Those people should be involved who has money, knoweldge and who has desire to do better for others. We run away from politics and then blame others, that is wrong. We have to sit over there and then can apply the fundamentals which we think right. I think this is the solution.
