When I look at the current scenario, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in India are still in technological backwaters compared to advances in science and technology.

Despite the fact that technology has changed a lot over the past decade, when we look at how SMEs use technology, there has been only a limited adoption of the various new technologies.

It's sad that even as the rate of change in technology has accelerated, the pace of usage of these technologies in businesses at the bottom of the pyramid has not increased dramatically.

I think with increasing competition, globalization and uncertainty due to global slowdown, the prime focus of SMEs today should be to continuously innovate by leveraging collaboration across all geographical locations and different functions.

Technologies for SMEs should aim at fueling innovation, business agility, easy to integrate with existing systems and processes, leveraging communication and information management.

There is no doubt whatsoever, that technology upgradation is the only way to improve quality and cost competitiveness of the SME sector.

To survive, grow and win, SMEs will have to continuously infuse the latest technology tools in their production processes and marketing and management functions to cut costs, gain efficiency and consistency.

I strongly believe that in the future, only those SMEs who will have a strong technological base and willingness to restructure themselves will be successful to make their own contribution to the Indian economy.

If India is to achieve its ambition to be an economic power, the ability to be constantly in step with the changing dynamics of different markets through technology upgradation will have to be put on an overdrive.

To succeed in today's rapidly changing business environment, SMEs need real-time business intelligence updates.

By providing an interactive interface between the research fraternity and SMEs, technology plays a vital role to help SMEs to constantly move up the value chain. Beyond insights for new products or services development, technology has to and will provide a multi-prolonged strategy for maximizing business opportunities for these enterprises.

Indian SMEs have a great future provided they equip themselves with the latest technologies, machinery and good communication systems.

Technology upgradation and implementation in maximum possible ways can enhance the performance of SMEs. Time has come and it's today for SMEs to adopt technology on a war-footing. SMEs with poor technology adaptation will find it difficult to survive in the highly competitive field.

Issues and solution for SME'S to survive
L.N.Raghavan-Consultant | Thu Dec 18 07:09:08 2008
Dear Mr.Bikky Khosla. Your editorial is the true reflection of status of Indian SMEs. But few questions are still un answered both by SMES and Authorities. There are two types of SME's. First one ,who is dependent of a major industries and second one is an having independent customers. Let us take the second type of SMES. SME’ s Need -Financial strength, Bank and Local government subsidies. -Market knowledge and requirements both Indian and Global -Employment of skilled and Knowledge workers. -Update latest information on new process and machinery availability -Tie up with and Technical educational Institutes and with Major Industries -How to produce best products in a cheaper way. -Quality management, Process controls and improvements, waste management. -Input on Information Technology improvements. -Avoid diversion of funds available for other purposes. -Check and Audit regular progress by financial institution and Government Authorities. -Reduce dependency of major industries -Quick recovery plan All the above are very essential for the improvement and sustaining of Glimpse of SME’s in India. Who is going to bell the cat? Regarding the first type of SMEs, some of the above information’s will be useful. Reduce dependency and search continuously for alternate market and developments taking place in other industries.

Technology usage in SMEs must to survive in uncertain times

I appreciate your opinion on the subject matter, however things are ot so demoralising as you have stated. SME's in India are growing and trying to adapt and implement latest advancement & technologies to sustain in this competitive market. India has seen lot of development in SME sector. These enterprises have not done extraordinary but its not that they are not doing anything to stay in this cut throat competitive market. We cannot expect changes in SME's technology to match pace with technological developments in their domain. Capital is something which becomes a hurdle and SME's need to judiciously use that. I agree that technological changes should be more dominant and fast but money is something that llimits SME's. Some of them can do at a much fast rate than other while some cannot even think of doing so at certain times.

I agree to what Mr. Khosla has indicated in his aricle. Its not that the Indian SME's are not aware. Everytime one comes into a dialogue with them and makes them aware of the loopholes in their way of doing business, by not using the latest technoloigies and the advancement in this competitive market, there is only one excuse and that is lack of finance. The Indian SME's are but surely everready to spend that type of extra for making their private lives comfortable, by investing that type of money in buying perhaps a huge villa, a Big name Car and sending children to the most expensive colleges abroad- all show-off business or upkeep of his status, which is more important than investing this kind of money in buying new technologies, or even a good PC to run his business. thats sad but true.
