Handicraft exports up 39 percent in January: EPCH

At the time when India's merchandise exports is flagging constantly, its handicrafts export is showing a healthy growth of 39.3 percent to USD 248 million in January compared to USD 178 million in same month in 2012.
"However there is a slowdown in EU markets, but due to new added markets like Latin America and CIS countries the handicrafts exports have registered a 22.08 percent growth during April-January 2012-13 to USD 2306 million against USD 1889 million during same period last year. And 39 percent up in January 2013," said Arvind Vadhera, Chairman, Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) at press conference in New Delhi today.
According to the data given by EPCH, the nodal agency for promotion of exports of handicrafts products, the items that registered highest export growth during April-January 2012-13 include wood ware, which was highest at 71 percent and shawls as art ware, which had achieved a 53 percent year-on-year export growth.
Vadhera also told reporters, that the sector is doing well and will definitely achieve the exports target of USD 3300 million for the year 2012-13. "We have achieved USD 2306.85 million till Jan-20013 and will definitely achieve the remaining USD 993.15 million," he added.
In order to achieve growth, EPCH is organizing the India Handicraft & Gift Fair for the past 18 years in the National Capital Region at India Expo Centre & Mart, Greater Noida.
The four-day-long 35th edition of the Indian Handicrafts and Gifts Fair (IHGF-Spring 2013), a B2B mega show, is a flagship event of the Council held bi-annually in the months of February and October known as IHGF-Spring and IHGF-Autumn respectively.
More than 2300 exhibitors drawn from various regions and States of India will be displaying a very wide variety of Handicrafts at this show.
The major product categories will be giftsware, kitchenware, decorative, furnishing, furniture, tableware, gardenware, houseware and fashion accessories, according to Arvind Vadhera, Chairman-EPCH.
The crafts of Jammu and Kashmir will also be highlighted by an exclusive display while the products of North Eastern States will, as usual, will be highlighted in a separate area to attract the attention of the buyers, he added.
