The government is planning to set up compressed natural gas (CNG) stations along all the highways in the country in the next three years, the petroleum and natural gas regulator said Friday.

"I expect that in about three years time CNG stations will cover all the highways in the country. This will make CNG more sustainable option for the transportation sector," said L. Mansingh, chairman, Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board.

Mansingh was speaking at the launch of Maruti Suzuki's new range of CNG fitted cars.

He also said the government is planning to open gas networks in 25 cities in the coming three years.

With only 654 CNG gas stations at present for nearly 9.35 lakh vehicles, vast areas in the country apart from Delhi, Mumbai and the state of Gujarat have very few CNG filling stations.

"We have identified geographical areas to set up about 330 distribution centres in the coming five years," Mansingh added.

It is expected that by 2014-15, the country will have around 1,500 CNG gas stations.
