In the spirit of the VLFM programmes which promotes Industry-Academia and Government cooperation, the participating organizations for the Visionary SME Programme will be Confederation of Indian Industry, IIM Calcutta, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, CMTI, Bangalore and EDI, Ahmedabad.

"In the first year, 80 SMEs are likely to participate in four centers, i.e., Chennai, Gurgaon, Pune, Kolkatta. This number will be rapidly expanded to cover to 240 SMEs in the second year and thereafter 800 SMEs in the third year," said Dr. V. Krishnamurthy, Chairman, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) on Tuesday.

The SME Accelerated Development System will consist of four elements:

  • Breakthrough Management Skills
  • Community network and Mentor network
  • SME Gurukul
  • SME Recognition

"This year, we are taking the lead jointly with Japan International Cooperation Agency, to put in place an additional intervention framework which we are calling a SME Accelerated Development System, or, the Visionary SME programme under the guidance of Japanese Expert Prof. Shoji Shiba," said Dr. Krishnamurthy.

"The programme is aimed at selecting SMEs who would be well on their way to become global SMEs with appropriate training and mentoring under the programme. The biggest advantage of a SME is its flexibility, agility and it's entrepreneurial leaders. It is this character of SMEs that will be focused and leveraged under this new initiative to make them global players," he added.

The National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council has put Manufacturing and Skill building for Manufacturing on the top of the agenda keeping in mind the growth requirements of this sector over the next fifteen years. A year ago the NMCC started Visionary Leaders for Manufacturing Programme for training future leaders for the Indian manufacturing sector.

"The first batch of 68 participants will graduate within a month from now. Placement is 100% for these forward looking leaders who would make a significant contribution in their new positions to transform manufacturing industry," said Dr. Krishnamurthy.
